Unleash Your Inner Leader To Win Hearts, Minds and Success.

Today, let’s unlock your potential for leadership by grasping what it takes to be an influential and trusted leader. We all can lead and make a difference.

Leadership is a powerful tool for relating to people, understanding their needs and motivations and guiding them toward a shared vision of success.

Leadership is relationship.

At its core, leadership is about people. Yet, too often, we get caught up in the trappings of authority. We focus solely on objectives and neglect the human element, which is crucial for building trust and engagement within the team.

This focus on authority makes it challenging to:

  • Bridge the gap between your vision of success and the day-to-day realities faced by those you want to lead.
  • Navigate interpersonal dynamics.
  • Overcome isolation.

When we prioritize authority over relationships, we value efficiency over effectiveness. We risk creating toxic environments where morale diminishes, productivity decreases, innovation stifles and fulfillment is lacking.

Action→ Lead from the front, middle and back.

In a relational approach to leadership, leaders consistently shift between three positions to build the necessary trust and influence to bring their vision to fruition, successfully manage diverse groups of people and create a concrete sense of belonging for all.

Front: Inspiring Purpose

At the forefront of a relational leadership approach is the ability to “step out in front,” connecting the dots between your vision and the aspirations of those you want to influence. You cast a compelling vision that resonates with the hearts and minds of those you lead.

Middle: Fostering Connection

To understand what is in others’ hearts and minds, you must sometimes“get in the trenches” of their daily schedules, creating meaningful connections beyond the superficial. By being present and available as best you can, you earn credibility and respect.

Back: Nurturing Growth

At the core of relational leadership is the ability to “get behind and support” others. You listen and empathize with the experiences, emotions and aspirations of those you lead. With vulnerability and authenticity, you link their journey to yours, creating a culture of community where everyone feels heard, seen and valued.

What this looks like in practice.

Sarah’s new position as a leader came with a difficult and distrusting team. Taking the initiative to stay attuned to the needs of each team member, she actively sought out those who were disengaged or struggling. As she got to know her team, she tested several iterations of her vision until she found the one that struck the right cord. While frustrating at first, in hindsight, the process paved the way for trust and collaboration.

Alex is a community leader who advocates for a local cause. Although his powerful vision for a better world inspired many, his volunteers lost enthusiasm as soon as the reality of what needed to be done became evident. That’s when Alex rolled up his sleeves and started working with them behind the scenes to understand where the disconnect was and how he could overcome it.

If you are struggling with your team or any professional relationship, step back and figure out where to spend more time to develop more trust; front, middle, or back. To win the hearts and minds of those you lead, position yourself wherever you must to strengthen relationships, the foundation upon which everything else rests.

Until next week, take good care.
