Happy New Year!
The beginning of the year holds a special energy—a clean slate, a chance to re-imagine what’s possible. But let’s be honest: ambitious resolutions often crumble before the calendar flips to February. Why? Because most of them are too much. They can be too rigid, overwhelming and disconnected from what truly matters.
I like a different approach. Instead of lofty, complicated goals, pick one, inspiring word to align all your attention and efforts. This will help you have a truly life-changing year.
Last year, my word was trust, and it changed everything for me. It helped me quiet my doubts, and take risks I wouldn’t have dared before.
This year, my word is hope. Here’s why.
Why Hope Matters.
Negativity tends to attract attention. It’s often equated with intelligence or preparedness. It’s no surprise that leaders, teams, and individuals focus heavily on what could go wrong.
This defensive posture has value. It helps detect threats and solve problems but comes at a cost. It narrows your focus, stifles creativity, and makes opportunities harder to see.
Hope is the antidote. Research in behavioral psychology suggests that hope isn’t passive. It’s powerful. Jamil Zaki, a psychology professor at Stanford University, explains that hope goes beyond optimism.
- Optimism believes the future will turn out well. Although optimists may feel content, they often stay passive, waiting for a brighter tomorrow.
- Hope accepts uncertainty and emphasizes action. Hopeful people believe things can turn out well but they also think their actions make a difference.
Hope involves willpower, the desire to bring about positive outcomes. It also involves waypower, the ability to find a way to achieve them. Hope reminds me that even in times of challenge – creativity, effort, and persistence can change the course of events. It’s the spark that turns uncertainty into possibility.
Why one word works.
Choosing a single word for the year offers a powerful clarity and focus that can be adapted to any situation.
- Simple: One word is easy to remember and keeps your intentions front and center.
- Flexible: Life changes and your word can adapt to meet you where you are.
- Motivating: A thoughtfully chosen word aligns with your values and goals.
- Sustainable: One word fosters consistency in your actions over time.
- Empowering: Words can reframe setbacks with a new perspective and encourage a more positive approach.
Now, it’s your turn.
Think about where you feel stuck right now. Where do you want the most growth or change?
Explore a few actionable words that speak to the essence of what you’re seeking—maybe it’s resilience, balance, or connection.
Choose the word that inspires you a lot, challenges you a little and feels like a guiding force.
To get you thinking, here are some words people have shared with me for the new year:
- Courage to face what feels hard and move through it anyway.
- Peace to calm the noise and live from a centered place.
- Create to bring ideas to life instead of waiting for the “right time.”
What will be your focus in 2025?
This year, hope will be my guiding force. I am committed to believing there is a way through all obstacles and believing that I will find that way.
What’s your word for 2025? To make it feel a little more official, hit reply and share it with me. I’d love to hear what’s guiding you this year.
